Veterinary Dentistry in Larchmont Village, LA

Healthy teeth mean more than a bright smile and fresh breath—oral health plays a vital role in your pet’s overall comfort and longevity. Dental disease is one of the most common conditions affecting dogs and cats, and it often progresses quietly. Many pets continue eating and playing normally even as infection and inflammation develop below the gumline. Routine dental cleanings, digital X-rays, and early detection are key to preventing pain and protecting whole-body health.

At Larchmont Village Vet, we provide advanced dental care with the same compassion, clear communication, and high medical standards that define our practice. Every dental procedure includes a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT), allowing our veterinary team to thoroughly evaluate your pet’s mouth, address hidden concerns, and create a treatment plan tailored to their needs.

Why Dental Care Matters

  • Periodontal disease—protecting gums and supporting structures
  • Painful tooth decay or infection—keeping your pet comfortable and able to eat
  • Tooth loss—preserving chewing function and quality of life
  • Secondary health issues—reducing the risk of damage to organs affected by chronic oral inflammation

Consistent dental care helps your pet stay healthy, happy, and pain-free for years to come.

What to Expect During a COHAT

All cat and dog cleanings are performed under general anesthesia for a thorough, stress-free experience. Each pet will complete pre-anesthetic blood work to ensure their safety and health during the procedure.

  • Our 11-Step Veterinary COHAT

    1. Full-Body Examination: A nose-to-tail assessment and review of medical and dental history help identify concerns and guide the dental plan.
    2. Pre-Anesthetic Blood Work: A complete blood panel evaluates organ function and confirms that anesthesia is safe for your pet.
    3. Pre-Medication: Sedation and pain-relief medications are given before anesthesia to keep pets comfortable and reduce the amount of anesthetic needed.
    4. IV Catheter & Fluids: An intravenous catheter enables the safe delivery of anesthetic agents and fluids, maintaining hydration and blood pressure throughout the procedure.
    5. Dental X-Rays: Full-mouth radiographs reveal the “iceberg” of dental disease hidden below the gumline, essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
    6. Comprehensive Oral Exam: The veterinarian evaluates every tooth and all oral tissues, checking for gum inflammation, fractures, mobility, pockets, masses, or other abnormalities.
    7. Treatment Planning: Findings from the oral exam and X-rays are charted, and a treatment plan is reviewed with the pet owner before any procedures are performed.
    8. Scaling & Polishing: Plaque and tartar are removed above and below the gumline using ultrasonic and hand instruments, followed by polishing and a cleansing rinse.
    9. Advanced Treatments: With pet owner approval, indicated procedures, such as periodontal therapy or extractions, are performed during the same visit.
    10. Recovery & Monitoring: After anesthesia, pets recover under close supervision until they are awake, stable, and ready to return home.
    11. At-Home Dental Guidance: Pet owners receive personalized instructions for brushing, dental products, and preventive care to support healthy teeth between professional cleanings.
