Domestic Travel
For trips within the continental United States, we recommend contacting us well in advance to ensure your pet’s paperwork is ready on time. Most airlines require a health certificate for pets traveling domestically, and each state may have its own entry requirements, including rabies vaccination waiting periods that could affect your travel timeline.
A
Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) must be completed within 10 days of travel. This document confirms that a licensed veterinarian has examined your pet and deemed them healthy and fit for transport, helping ensure a safe and smooth journey.
Additional Travel Considerations
In addition to the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), you may need to address several other factors for a safe and comfortable trip:
- Airline requirements for cabin or cargo travel
- Appropriate carrier size and setup
- Temperature restrictions for pets flying in cargo
- Documentation for service dogs
- Guidance on the use of sedatives
When appropriate, a Certificate of Acclimation can also be issued at the veterinarian’s discretion, based on your pet’s health and temperature-related travel needs.
Because airline regulations can change, we strongly recommend confirming all requirements directly with your carrier before booking.

International Travel
Traveling abroad with your pet requires an International Health Certificate (IHC), which involves a more detailed process and varies depending on your destination. Careful planning is essential to avoid delays, unexpected requirements, or quarantine upon arrival.
Before scheduling an appointment for an IHC, please complete and submit the following form:

Important Considerations for International Travel
In addition to airline and destination requirements, we recommend reviewing and preparing the following:
- Airline rules, including required health documents, approved crate specifications, and pet eligibility
- Regulations from your pet’s country of origin
- Entry requirements for the destination country
- Coordination with the state veterinarian for paperwork, pet passports, and travel permits
- Any additional treatments required by specific countries, such as tapeworm or parasite prevention
- Rabies titer testing, if mandated by the destination
- Export and import permits
- CDC documentation, if applicable
- Any supplemental paperwork required by the destination country
- Guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on pet travel
Careful attention to these details helps ensure a smooth, safe journey for your pet.
